Self-Assessment Tools
One valuable way to begin the career exploration process is by taking a self-assessment. These tools can help you clarify your values, skills, personality, and interests and may provide insights in identifying major and occupational options. These instruments may:
- Serve as a good starting point for clarifying your career direction.
- Indicate some career areas that might be a good fit for you.
- Provide new insights or confirm things you already know about yourself.
- Help organize self-information so it can be more easily translated into potential career options.
Our experience shows that in many cases, the process itself presents possibilities. Our career counselors can help you dig deeper and learn as much as you can about yourself and potential career options. Make sure to schedule a follow-up career counseling appointment to discuss your self-assessment results.
MyPlan Computerized Guidance Program (Free)
- Helps you learn more about how your interests, values, and abilities fit into the world of work and relate to specific occupations.
- Provides detailed information on occupations, educational opportunities, and industries.
- A counseling session is highly recommended to help you maximize the use of your results.

Strong Interest Inventory® ($15 fee)
- Compares your interests with those of a general sample group and with professionals in various careers.
- Helps you define general career areas and identifying a list of occupations that are a good match for your interest patterns.
- A counseling session in which you discuss your results with a career counselor is required.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® ($15 fee)
- Personality assessment tool that produces a 4-letter type to describe your natural preferences and tendencies.
- Helps you describe your strengths, your preferred function in a job or organization, and specific career areas that might be more attractive to an individual with your particular preferences.
- A counseling session in which you discuss your results with a career counselor is required.

StrengthsQuest™ ($15 fee. Free for first-year students.*)
- Assesses your top strengths in terms of how you interact with and approach the world.
- Helps you learn how to develop and apply your strengths in academic, career, leadership and other life situations.
- A counseling session is highly recommended to help you maximize the use of your results.
