Internship Tips & Ideas

  • Internships, paid or unpaid, can be helpful for deciding on a major/career as well as for gaining experience to move you forward on your post graduation job search. This section will deal with the latter.
  • Research has shown that employers value hands on experience more than ever before. So, start early and aim for as many internships as possible. Get organized. Develop an internship search plan. Stay organized.
  • Know yourself. Understanding your strengths/weakness and what is important to you will help you to focus your internship search and market yourself more effectively to employers. Even though you are seeking experience yourself, employers still want to know what you have to contribute to them in an internship. See Learn About Yourself.
  • Explore internship choices. With 1000's of choices there are bound to be perfect opportunities for you. See Explore your options.
  • Narrow your options and test your career choices by getting a first hand look at occupations. See Narrow Your Choices/Check It Out.
  • Check out the Events Calendar for internship search related workshops and events.
  • Prepare your resume and cover letter and have them reviewed by a career counselor.
  • Create a method for tracking who you apply to, what stage of the application process you are in and how you followed up with each employer.

    • Meet employers through campus sponsored events.

      • Network with those who can help you uncover potential internship opportunities.
      • Meet-a-Mentor Program can bring you together with professionals in a variety of career fields who have volunteered to help you.
      • Research employing organizations to identify internship vacancies and employers who could benefit from your education.
      • Employer Websites - these employers requested to be linked to the UB Career Services site to attract UB candidates.
  • Research employers to whom you plan to apply in order to demonstrate to the employer that you can best meet their needs.
  • Target your resume and cover letter to each employer and opportunity. Have your resume and cover letter reviewed again by a career counselor.
  • Prepare yourself for the interview. This includes researching the employer and position, dressing appropriately, being familiar with different types of interviews, knowing what questions to ask and what will be asked of you, practice interviewing and more. Being prepared for the interview is a must for impressing the employer.
  • Be sure to follow up after each step of the application process. This includes contacting employers after you apply, sending thank you letters after the interview or job/internship fair, and keeping in touch with mentors or those with whom you networked.
  • Internship Credit: At UB there are various ways you can seek credit for internship experience. Check with department academic advisors, faculty, and departmental internship programs (i.e. Engineering Career Institute External Site Link Icon , School of Management LEAP Program External Site Link Icon , College of Arts and Sciences Interdisciplinary Majors External Site Link Icon ).
