Student Caps & Gowns

Associate, Bachelor and Master degree candidates/graduates
These candidates purchase their appropriate academic cap, gown, and colored tassel at the University Bookstore, 200 Lee Entrance, on the North Campus. The Master order includes a hood.
Associate, Bachelor, and Master apparel can be purchased beginning March 3 through May 11. It is best to purchase early to ensure proper sizing.

The undergraduate cap and gown is blue; the master cap and gown is black. Tassels are available in the school academic colors appropriate to the University at Buffalo for all ceremonies.

Doctoral / Ph.D. candidates
These candidates, including M.D., Ph.D., Au.D., Ed.D., L.L.M., J.D., PharmD., D.D.S., D.P.T. and D.N.S. conferrals, rent their academic dress through the University Bookstore (North Campus). Candidates for M.D. and J.D. degrees, please see the additional information below.

Doctoral / Ph.D. orders must be placed between January 28 and March 3 in order to guarantee the correct hood colors. A late charge will be added to all orders placed after March 3.

Rentals can be picked up at the bookstore beginning April 21 and should be returned to the bookstore immediately after each graduation ceremony and no later than June 1. (All rented regalia for the School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences' exercise must be returned immediately after the ceremonies, to the robing area.)

Ceremony caps and gowns for graduate students are black, with the exception of the Medical School regalia which is blue and green. Tassels are available in the school academic colors appropriate to the University at Buffalo for all ceremonies.

Master and Doctoral / Ph.D. Hoods
The hoods are lined in blue and gold. Master hoods have a three inch velvet border, while the Doctoral/Ph.D. hoods have a five inch border. The color of the velvet border indicates the academic discipline; Ph.D. hoods are trimmed in royal blue.
