Information for Parents
Information for Parents The University at Buffalo has more than 40 fraternities and sororities affiliated with our campus. Membership can provide your son or daughter with a positive, enriching experience along with a myriad of leadership and service opportunities. To guide fraternities and sororities on our campus in a positive direction, the University has instituted a number of specific policies and procedures. Such policies include "deferred rush." This means that freshmen are not allowed to join a fraternity or sorority until they have earned 12 credits and have a qpa of at least 2.000, usually their second semester. This allows students to focus on making the academic transition, before becoming heavily involved in an organization that requires a serious time commitment. Our new member policy institutes a 6-week maximum new member (pledge) education program, during which sororities and fraternities host activities and events to educate new members about their organization and Greek Life at UB. Students who choose to become members of recognized Greek-letter organizations benefit from:
It is our hope that, if your son/daughter meets the eligibility requirements for fraternity or sorority membership, he/she thoroughly investigates the group with which he/she wants to affiliate. In addition, please encourage him/her to inquire about the status of the organization. For questions about recognized student organizations, please contact Greek Affairs at (716) 645-2055 or email us. Please click on Member Organizations above for a listing of fraternal organizations that are affiliated with our campus. |
