Future Residents
Assignments
The assignment process is different based on whether you are living in the residence halls or apartments.
Residence Halls
For incoming students, who are new to the university, assignments for the residence halls are on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications will be stamped with date received and assigned by the Campus Living staff in that order. Roommate choices will be honored before room choices. Roommates will be broken up only if there are no rooms available to accommodate the request. Returning residence hall students have priority in the room assignment process, and they normally select most single rooms and available two-person rooms in the Ellicott Complex outside first-year halls.
If one or more application items (deposit, agreement card, or preferences) are received after the priority deadline, your name may be placed on a waiting list and you may not be assigned housing.
Current students, who do not currently live in the halls, will participate in the on-line room reservation process with current residents in early spring. Students will log in to a special website and select their room at a given time based on their lottery number. Reservation materials including the lottery number will be mailed shortly before the reservation dates.
Apartments
Unlike the residence halls, in general, apartments are not assigned based on date received. Instead eligible applications are prioritized by number of semesters the applicant has lived on campus. Each application is then given a random, computer generated lottery number based on the number of semesters on campus. Apartments are offered to students working from the top of this priority list, until the supply is exhausted.
Groups are assigned before individuals, based on the availability of whole and partially open units. We encourage students to indicate a roommate preference should their group have to be separated.
Those applying for the apartments after the collection period or for January move-in are considered based on availability of apartments and the date application was received.
