Professional Positions
Area Directors (AD)
At the University at Buffalo, ADs are selected from a highly competitive national pool of residence life professionals with extensive experience. They manage the staff of an Area (Apartments, Ellicott East, Ellicott South, or South Campus) with up to 2200 students. An AD:
- Directly supervises up to three full-time professionals and several part-time professionals
- Manages multiple budgets for residence halls, Areas, and committees
- Chairs at least one departmental committee, meeting at least weekly
- Lives off campus but serves on a rotating duty schedule
Residence Hall Directors (RHDs)
UB's RHDs are carefully selected from a competitive national pool for their fit with UB's diverse student population and our mission as a leading global research University. RHDs are full-time, professional administrators with a master's degrees in college student personnel or related fields. An RHD:
- Supervises a staff of between 15-18 RA's
- Interacts with other URH&A departments to promote an environment conducive to social and intellectual growth
- Lives in and maintains an office in their residence halls
- Holds a full-time, 12-month, live-in professional position
- Is responsible for residential life functions in one or more residence halls, housing up to 575 students
- Is supervised by an Area Director
- Supervises an Assistant Hall Director and up to 18 Resident Advisors
- Fosters a positive, secure, and clean community that encourages student development.
- Advises Hall Council
- Serves as part of the on-call duty rotation

Complex Directors (CDs)
UB's CDs are carefully selected from a competitive national pool for their fit with UB's diverse student population and our mission as a leading global research University. CDs are full-time, professional administrators with a master's degree in college student personnel or related fields. A CD:
- Interacts with other URH&A departments to promote an environment conducive to social and intellectual growth
- Lives in and maintains an office in their Village
- Holds a full-time, 12-month, live-in professional position
- Is responsible for residential life functions housing up to 625 students
- Responsible for traditional property management functions (direct outside vendors for apartment unit turnover activities, landscaping and snow removal.) A large operating budget is almost managed by the Complex Director
- Is supervised by an Area Director
- Supervises an Assistant Complex Director and up to 8 Community Assistants
- Fosters a positive, secure, and clean community that encourages student development.
- Serves as part of the on-call duty rotation

Assistant Hall Directors
Assistant Hall Directors are part-time professional administrators usually working on advanced degrees. An Assistant Hall Director:
- Provides assistance to RHDs to manage their respective halls
- Is a part-time professional position
- Lives in and maintains an office in their residence halls
- Has opportunities to develop skills in supervision, program development, conflict management, budgets, and decision making
- May supervise lounges, budgeting, supervising Academic Assistants or tutoring staff, and planning programming
- May directly supervise a small staff of Resident Advisors
- Is a stepping stone to a career in student affairs

Assistant Complex Directors
Assistant Complex Directors are part-time professional administrators usually working on advanced degrees. An Assistant Complex Director:
- Supervises student and staff development programs
- Supervises Apartment's on-site Business and Fitness Centers
- Assists in coordinating daily property management operations and student services (including mail package delivery, lock changes and agreement renewals)
- Assist with apartment office supervision
- Is a part-time professional position
- Lives in and maintains an office in their apartment complex
- Has opportunities to develop skills in supervision, program development, conflict management, budgets, and decision making

Office Managers
All University Residence Halls and Apartments offices are staffed by professional administrative staff who:
- Assist with staff scheduling
- Provide support during hall opening and closings
- Interact with students, answering questions and referring them to the appropriate office
- Assist with judicial tracking, room management, and office budgeting
- Supervise students who work in the office or in mail delivery
