Professional Development

Professional development for UB's professional residential staff takes many forms and is an important part of the UB experience.

  • Hall Directors begin training at the end of July and continue through the first two weeks of August with all weekends off until RA Training begins.
  • Assistant Hall Directors begin training on August 1 and continue with all weekends off until RA Training begins.
  • Complex Directors and Assistant Complex Directors are trained throughout the Summer before the August apartment turnover process begins.
  • Two- or three-day training session in January professional staff.
  • Bi-weekly professional development sessions on such topics as supervision, counseling, reference writing or communication styles are scheduled during the academic year.
  • Professional Development funds are available to Residence Hall Directors and Complex Directors depending on budget availability.

Professional Staff Proficiencies Program

Campus Living developed a set of core proficiencies to assist the Professional Staff Training Committee as well as individual staff by identifying areas of ability and proficiency. The proficiencies have been developed based on the observable skills of our more successful residential life professional staff, and in consultation with competencies published by the National Housing Training Institute (NHTI) of the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I)

Over a two year period, the Professional Staff Training/Development committee will offer professional development sessions to provide staff with exposure to each of the 12 proficiencies.

Each semester in conjunction with their supervisors, professional staff will choose proficiencies (listed below) to help focus on developing their individual professional development plan for the semester/year.
