UB 101 Core Course Topic: Appreciating Cultural Diversity
This first year college student diversity awareness workshop is designed specifically to expose/introduce students to the concepts of diversity and cultural lens, as well as navigating the transition to a large diverse institution. Students will have the opportunity to engage with fellow classmates through interactive exercises and facilitated discussion. They will also be informed about diversity awareness programs and resources that exist on the UB campus and elsewhere.
Objectives
- Introduce students to UB’s cultural diversity
- Describe the benefits of attending a university with a diverse student population
- Engage students in discussions and group exercises about issues related to diversity
- Have an increased awareness of what the concept of diversity encompasses, e.g. race, class, gender, disability, sexual orientation, geographical location, resident/commuter student, international/domestic student.
- Have an increased awareness of his/her personal cultural lens and the impact family, community, friends and education have in shaping it.
- Have an increased awareness of their fellow workshop participants’ cultural lenses
