It is the responsibility of the sponsors of an event to ensure that advertising conforms to these guidelines.
General Advertising Guidelines
All types of advertisements should comply with the following:
- The University will not permit activities and events designed solely or primarily to promote consumption of alcohol.
- Alcohol will not be used as an inducement to participate in a campus event.
- Advertisement or promotional scheme on the grounds of the University at Buffalo that requires the purchase or consumption of an alcoholic beverage to participate in any promotion, program or activity is not allowed.
- Advertising and publicity for on- and off-campus events should conform to state and local laws and the policies of the university. All advertisements should include the name of the sponsoring organization.
- No "all-you-can-drink" or promotion of the unlimited consumption of alcohol.
- Publicity should state that a valid driver's license or state of New York photo identification is required.
- Advertising shall not contain visual representations of foaming mugs, beer cans, or other items promoting alcoholic beverages.
- Publicity should state the variety of refreshments available, with no single emphasis. The alcohol logo should be secondary in size, prominence, and distinction from the actual title or name of the event.
- Alcohol related advertisements will foster responsible use of alcohol (e.g. "Know when to say when", "It's okay to say 'No'," - "Drinking and driving don't mix.").
- Car-pooling, and designated driver options should be strongly encouraged by the party host.
- Alcohol-free events should be strongly promoted.
- Advertising that portrays drinking alcohol as a solution to problems or necessary to social, sexual, or academic success is prohibited.
- Kegs or cases of beer, or bottles of whiskey should not be provided as awards to individual students or campus organizations.
- No group or college publications may solicit or advertise businesses which indicate that alcoholic beverages are free or sold at reduced prices.
- No uncontrolled sampling as part of campus marketing programs are permitted.
- Promotional activities will not include "drinking contests."
Specific Advertising Guidelines
- Official university publications relating to academic programs and offerings will not solicit or accept alcohol advertising for alcoholic beverages.
- Advertisements for alcoholic beverages may be accepted for non-academic university publications with primary readerships of persons over the legal drinking age. The editors of such publications will reject advertisements that encourage excessive use of alcoholic beverages.
- The University does not regulate content or advertisements in autonomous student-edited publications, but encourages the editorship to make responsible decisions regarding advertising for alcoholic beverages.
