Community Service Program

Community Service was initiated on campus by the Division of Student Affairs in Spring of 1990. The program is administered by the Office of Judicial Affairs/Student Advocacy.

Community Service is a disciplinary sanction which requires a student to perform unpaid work of benefit to the University community. Community Service provides an opportunity for the offender to contribute positively to his/her community. The tasks support and supplement services existing on campus.

Referral Sources

Community Service sanctions may be imposed by the University's Student-Wide Judiciary, the University Residence Halls & Apartments staff, and occasionally other sources such as the (external) Criminal Court system. A time frame is also established within which the hours must be completed.

The steps to a successful community service assignment are as follows:

Upon receipt of a Community Service sanction, the student must contact the Judicial Affairs Office to make arrangements for attendance at a Community Service Meeting. At this time, potential placement sites are discussed and site assignments are determined by the conclusion of this meeting.

Students must contact site supervisors to establish a mutually convenient schedule. Upon completion of Community Service hours, the supervisor provides the Judicial Affairs Office with documentation.

Non-Compliance

Failure to complete assignments or to make contact with the Judicial Affairs Office before the appropriate deadlines will result in a Disciplinary Checkstop. A Disciplinary Checkstop prevents the student from conducting any registration activities. It can only be removed by arrangement with the Judicial Affairs Community Service Coordinator.

If there are difficulties with placement site arrangements or completion dates, the Judicial Affairs Office must be notified. Difficulties at placement sites will also be dealt with by the Judicial Affairs Community Service Coordinator if necessary.

A failure to complete assigned hours may require a return to the original sanctioning source, which could result in additional sanctions.

Placement Sites

There are more than twenty locations that students can choose from to fulfill Community Service obligations. Representative Community Service locations include:

Tasks performed by Community Service participants at these sites are similar to those performed by student assistants, support staff or other staff. Students may also elect to offer their services to volunteer agencies outside the University with permission of the program. The procedure for fulfilling a Community Service assignment is available in PDF (21KB) or Word (25KB) format.
