Spring 2012 Workshops

What a Great Idea! The Power of Creative Leadership (Thursday, January 26, 5:30pm-6:30pm)

This interactive and fun workshop will introduce participants to the concept and value of creative leadership. Through examination of real-world creative leaders, hands-on idea-generating activities and problem-solving techniques, participants will learn how to generate and apply new ideas to solve problems in our fast-paced, ever changing world.

Are You Leading At Your Personal Best? (Tuesday, January 31, 5:30-6:30pm)

What kind of leader are you? Do you encourage and inspire others? Do you role-model the attributes that make a good leader great? Come take the Leadership Challenge and decide for yourself if you're leading at your personal best!

iLead: What Steve Jobs Taught Us About Leadership (Wednesday, Feb. 8, 5:00pm-6:00pm)

When Steve Jobs passed away in October 2011 the world lost a true visionary and arguably one of the most innovative leaders of the 21st century. Although we continue to mourn his passing, we must also learn from his extraordinary life. This session will explore what Steve Jobs, the founder and former CEO of Apple, Inc. taught us about leadership and how those lessons relate to our everyday lives.

Developing Self-Confidence as a Leader (Thursday, Feb. 16, 5:30pm-6:30pm)

If you don't see yourself as a leader, no one else is going to either. Developing self-confidence in your ability to lead is a process of practice and reflection. This workshop will give you some tools, tips, and insights into developing your own self-confidence as a leader.

Leaving Your Legacy (Tuesday, February 21, 5:30pm-6:30pm)

Are you an outgoing leader from your student organization? Outgoing leaders need to learn how to most effectively pass the torch to the new incoming student leaders. Come learn about how you can leave your legacy and set your organization up for success with an easy transition to a new executive board.

Follow the Leader: Not Just a Childhood Game (Wednesday, Feb. 22, 5:00pm-6:00pm)

What happens if there are too many cooks in the kitchen? Come learn about why followers are so important, and the art of followership. You will learn what qualities make a good followership and reasons people chose to follow.

The Nonverbal Advantage: Body Language at Work (Monday, Feb. 27, 5:00pm-6:00pm)

Shakira reminds us that our "hips don't lie," but what do your facials expressions say? The position of your hands? Your legs? This workshop will look at nonverbal communication and the messages conveyed through body language.

Perfecting the Art of Schmoozing (Wednesday, Feb. 29th, 5:00pm-6:0pm)

Despite the advances in social networking online, we still must know how to meet, mingle, make small talk and connect with others in the real world both in our professional and personal lives. You can IM, text, ping, or Twitter and yet, you will still get invited to a networking reception or a cousin's wedding and have to do the face-to-face.

Principled Negotiation: Getting to Yes (Monday, March 5, 5:00pm-6:00pm)

Like it or not, you are a negotiator. Negotiation is a fact of life. It is a basic means of getting what you want from others and we often use it to settle differences. Come to this workshop for a better understanding of the principles involved in creating Win-Win situations and of how you can be successful in the art of negotiation.

ACT Now: Leading for Social Justice (Wednesday, March 21, 5:00pm-6:00pm)

Social Justice is about equality and human rights and leadership is about making a difference. In this workshop you will be learn specific leadership skills to create social justice on the campus and for the community.

Egonomics: Make Your Ego a Powerful Leadership Tool (Monday, April 2, 5:00pm-6:00pm)

Arrogant. Stubborn. Self-centered. These are words most people associate with ego. But what if your ego was a positive thing? Come learn how this seemingly pejorative concept can liberate you to becoming a rare and respected leader.

30 Tips and Public Speaking Tricks (Wednesday, April 4, 5:00pm-6:00pm)

Are you uncomfortable with public speaking? This workshop will present 30 tips and tricks to help you overcome your fears of public speaking and feel more prepared to speak in front of a crowd.

The Decline of Man: Why Men Are In Trouble (Tuesday, April 10, 5:30pm-6:30pm)

For the first time in history, women are better educated, more ambitious and arguably more successful than men. For the past 100 years the achievements of women have been recognized and celebrated; whereas, the decline of men seems to have been ignored. This session will explore this decline and discuss why it may be taking place.

Where's the Direction? The Art of Positive Facilitation (Wednesday, April 11, 5:00pm-6:00pm)

Ever find yourself in a group meeting with no direction? This session will teach the skills for positive facilitation as well as offer the chance to practice using those skills in small groups. You will be able to facilitate your group meetings through enabling and encouraging your members by using the skills learned during this session.

Beyond UB: Making a Difference in the US and Abroad (Thursday, April 12, 5:30pm-6:30pm)

Join us for a presentation and discussion about the impact UB students have while volunteering here in the United States and abroad. Hear about the successes, challenges, and life-changing experiences a group students faced while participating in an Alternative Break program.

DiSCover Your Leadership Style (Wednesday, April 18, 5:00pm-6:00pm)

In order to be an effective leader, one must first understand oneself. By recognizing one's own leadership style through the DiSC Behavioral Assessment, one can learn how to be an effective leader and will come to understand how others want to be treated in order to create an effective team.
