Student Leadership International Dialogue and Exchange (SLIDE)
The Student Leadership International Dialogue and Exchange (SLIDE) program is an international learning experience for UB student leaders, giving them an opportunity to learn about leadership from a global perspective and interact firsthand with other student leaders around the world. Between 10 and 15 UB students participate in each session. Participants receive a certificate of completion and earn 1.0 academic credits.
Students will study and interact with other student leaders in the host country. Students will travel together and learn models of leadership and share ideas for effective student leadership.
The Student Leadership International Dialogue and Exchange (SLIDE) program is designed to expose University at Buffalo student leaders to leadership and culture abroad in a number of facets. This program will:
- Examine historical and cultural types of leadership
- Expose students to a culture that is different than one's own
- Require students to reflect on their experiences from a holistic world view perspective
- Examine the reciprocal nature of leadership and service and the role of non-profit organizations in leadership for change.
SLIDE is supported by UB's Division of Student Affairs and the Office of International Education
SLIDE – Dominican Republic - March 10-17, 2012
Students participating in the SLIDE program will be travelling to the Dominican Republic and working with Orphanage Outreach. Orphanage Outreach is a non-profit organization whose primary focus is on education – teaching English, literacy, and public health. There are few teachers in the Dominican Republic who speak English, a pathway to educational and career opportunities. UB students will be teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) while being immersed in the Dominican Republic culture. Students will have the opportunity to speak to the leaders of the organization to learn about the commitment, work and leadership it takes to make a non-profit organization successful.
All students will be notified of their acceptance into the program by October 12.
The cost of the program can range from $1,400 - $1,800. Scholarships may be available and students will be assisted with all fund raising efforts.
Two information sessions will be offered:
- Tuesday, September 20 from 12-1 p.m. in 235 Student Union
- Monday, September 26 from 5-6 p.m. in 235 Student Union
