University Police Announce Second Citizens Police Academy

UB's University Police Department has announced that they will be holding their second Citizens Police Academy. Beginning February 10, and for seven weeks, from 6:30 pm until 9:30 pm, members of the University Police will teach members of the UB Community about police operations and other aspects of the job of university police officers. The academy is open to UB faculty, staff, and students.

University Police Begin Annual Seat Belt Awareness Campaign

University police at the University at Buffalo have begun their annual seat belt awareness campaign. Designed to remind students driving home for the winter break to wear their seat belts, officers hand out safety flyers and candy canes at traffic check points at various locations on campus.

Improving life in the Heights

Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown and UB President John B. Simpson announced new initiatives to improve safety, deter crime and enhance the quality of life in University Heights. These include joint police patrols along Main Street, new security cameras and the purchase of Segway Personal Transporters and bicycles for use by Buffalo and UB police officers. Read press release. 2/08 University Police Receives NYS Accreditation

We are pleased to announce that on Friday, February 29, 2008 the Division of Criminal Justice Services Commissioner Denise O'Donnell will be presenting a Certificate of Accomplishment to the University at Buffalo Police Department. We are the first SUNY Police Department to receive DCJS State Accreditation and are honored that Commissioner O'Donnell will be making a formal presentation acknowledging our accomplishments.

UB's Emergency Preparedness

As part of our ongoing priority to ensure campus emergency preparedness, the University at Buffalo offers a text messaging emergency alert system to the campus community. It's purpose is to disseminate critical information to subscribers of the system, whether it be extreme weather conditions, campus closings or serious campus security threats. Quarterly Employee Recognition Awards

On May 4th, University Police Chief Gerald Schoenle announced the department’s first quarter award recipients for 2009. The recipient of this quarter’s employee award is Officer Sean Ford, who captured a suspect that had stolen money from a person at an ATM in the Student Union.

Honorable mention for the first quarter was awarded to the other officers that assisted in the incident and also to Brieanna Hahn, who arrested a suspect driving a stolen vehicle and in possession of crack cocaine.

Campus Safety & Security

Please be vigilant! Report suspicious activity of any nature immediately to the University Police by calling 645-2222 from any phone, or use a campus blue light emergency telephone. The university has compiled a comprehensive list of resources for consultation and referral when concerns arise about students, faculty or staff who may pose a threat to themselves or others.

Personal Safety Committee Meetings

The Personal Safety Committee meets the second Tuesday of every month in 250 Student Union. Meetings are open to the public.
