University Police
Document Quick Links: Operation I.D. is a service available to all students, faculty and staff. In order to protect your valuables with Operation I.D., you must first obtain your own personal I.D. number from University Police. One part of the number identifies your police department while the other part identifies you as the property owner. When you receive your number, you will also be loaned free an electric engraver from University Police in Bissel Hall for marking your valuables, an Operation I.D. log, and warning decals to be placed at the entrance to your room, office, or home after you have engraved your valuables. Keep a log listing the valuables you have marked. Whether your property is lost or stolen--in New York or anywhere in the United States--the Operation I.D. number clearly identifies you as the owner. It works because it takes the profit out of crime and increases the criminal's risk of being caught. Most burglars sell their stolen goods to a "fence" or other illegal agent. If criminals know that the valuables in your home or dorm room are marked with the Operation I.D. number, chances are they'll move on to an easier target.
