AlcoholEDU
Dear New UB Student,
As you prepare to join the University at Buffalo, we share your excitement about the journey to come.
As you know, alcohol is a significant issue for high school and college students and throughout our lives. We believe, like hundreds of schools nationwide, that high-risk drinking has a significant effect on the academic and social lives of students. Because of this, the University at Buffalo takes a proactive approach to preventing alcohol abuse by requiring all new students to participate in AlcoholEDU.®
AlcoholEDU is a three-hour, on-line, research-based course in two parts, and includes three confidential surveys. Whether or not you drink, AlcoholEDU will help you make healthier and safer decisions and balance your social and academic life. Your participation will help UB understand our students’ alcohol-related attitudes and continuously improve our alcohol awareness programs.
You will learn more about AlcoholEDU at Orientation. In late July, you will receive an email with log-on information and more.
You must complete Part 1 of AlcoholEDU by August 20, 2008, before you come to campus. Part 2 must be completed by October 12, 2008.
Students who choose not to complete AlcoholEDU by the deadlines will be reported to the Office of Judicial Affairs and Student Advocacy, the office responsible for student conduct violations.
Please be aware that while all new students are required to complete this course, all survey responses are strictly confidential. The University will receive only information about the student body as a whole and never sees individual student's answers.
We are deeply committed to your health, welfare and success. I hope that you, like most students who take it, find AlcoholEDU rewarding and that it helps you have a great UB experience.

How do I Participate?
As you already know, all freshmen and transfer students must complete AlcoholEDU for College – an online, non-opinionated alcohol prevention program. Whether you drink or not, AlcoholEDU for College will help you make well-informed decisions about alcohol and will help you negotiate the drinking behavior of your peers. AlcoholEDU has two parts, both of which must be completed.
Part I consists of the following and must be completed by August 20, 2008:- Modules 1, 2, 3, and 4
- Surveys 1 and 2
- Pre-test and Exam
Part I takes about 2 ½ hours to complete, and we recommend that you take it in multiple sittings. You must earn a grade of 75% or higher on the exam to successfully complete Part I. About 45 days after completing Part I, you will receive an email asking you to complete Part II.
Part II consists of the following and must be completed by October 13, 2008:- Module 5
- Survey 3
It is important that we get a 100% completion rate, and as such, we will be tracking compliance and following-up with those students who do not fulfill this requirement. While we don’t expect this to be an issue, students who choose not to complete the program will be reported to the Office of Judicial Affairs and Student Advocacy, the office responsible for student conduct violations.
