AlcoholEDU

Dear New UB Student,

As you prepare for your University at Buffalo academic career, we share your excitement. Your experiences over the next few months will form the foundation for your college years and beyond.

As you know, alcohol can be a significant issue in the lives of high school and college students. In response to this, the University at Buffalo takes a proactive approach to alcohol abuse prevention. Because we believe that high-risk drinking affects academic, social and residential life on campus, new UB students are required to complete AlcoholEDU ® , a three-hour, on-line, research-based course that will help you think about your choices in relation to alcohol. Whether or not you drink, AlcoholEDU can help you make healthier and safer decisions and successfully balance your social life with your UB academic life.

You will receive a message in your UB Email account on or around July 31 with instructions for logging on and taking the course. You’ll also learn more about this program at Orientation. You are expected to complete Part 1 of AlcoholEDU (Modules 1-3) by August 24, 2009, just before UB’s Opening Weekend. You will receive information about completing Part II in the fall.

The AlcoholEDU course includes three surveys that gather information on alcohol-related attitudes and behaviors. All survey responses are strictly confidential; the University will only receive information about the student body as a whole and never sees an individual student's answers.

UB tracks compliance and we will follow up with those students who do not fulfill this requirement. While we don’t expect this to be a problem, students who choose not to complete the program will be reported to the office responsible for responding to student conduct violations.

We are deeply committed to your health, welfare and success, and that of the entire UB community. I hope you, like most students who take it, will find AlcoholEDU rewarding and that you will use what you learn to have a great UB experience in and out of the classroom.

For more information on UB wellness, AlcoholEDU and this requirement, please contact Wellness Education Services at (716) 645-2837 or alcoholedu@vpsa.buffalo.edu.

Sincerely,

How do I Participate?

As you already know, all freshmen and transfer students must complete AlcoholEDU for College – an online, non-opinionated alcohol prevention program. Whether you drink or not, AlcoholEDU for College will help you make well-informed decisions about alcohol and will help you negotiate the drinking behavior of your peers. AlcoholEDU has two parts, both of which must be completed.

Part I consists of the following and must be completed by August 24, 2009 - Deadline extended to Monday, 8/31 at midnight:

Part I takes about 2 ½ hours to complete, and we recommend that you take it in multiple sittings. You must earn a grade of 75% or higher on the exam to successfully complete Part I. About 45 days after completing Part I, you will receive an email asking you to complete Part II.

Part II consists of the following and must be completed by October 20, 2009 Deadline extended to Saturday, 10/31 at midnight:

It is important that we get a 100% completion rate, and as such, we will be tracking compliance and following-up with those students who do not fulfill this requirement. While we don’t expect this to be an issue, students who choose not to complete the program will be reported to the Office of Judicial Affairs and Student Advocacy, the office responsible for student conduct violations.
