Weight Management

"Freshman 15"

You've probably heard about the "Freshman 15", referring to the 15 pounds some freshman gain after coming to college. However, some research indicates that for those students who gain weight, 5 to 7 pounds is more usual. However rapid, significant weight gain can be a flag. Start early to develop good eating and exercise habits so your weight doesn't creep up unexpectedly.

Successful Weight Loss

The National Weight Control Registry has followed people who have successfully lost weight. Almost 90% lost weight through a combination of diet and exercise. Four common self-reported behaviors among these "successful losers" are:

  1. eating a low fat diet and eating 4 to 5 times during the day
  2. eating breakfast every day
  3. self-monitoring (either food records or weight check)
  4. extensive daily exercise (about 60 to 90 minutes/day)
