James E. Mauck, Director

Mr. Mauck is the Director of Athletic Bands at the University at Buffalo. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 2000 and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Trombone Performance in 2002 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He is currently seeking his PhD. in Music Education at the University at Buffalo.
Mr. Mauck designs and consults for many high school and collegiate marching bands throughout the Northeast and is sought after as a drill composer, conductor and educator. His principal achievements are in marching band, specifically precision drill writing and show design. He studied drill composition and the Precision Drill Philosophy with internationally known drill composer, the late Dr. A.R. Casavant. Mr. Mauck also studied with Dr. Charles Casavant (Director Emeritus of the IUP Marching Band) from 1996-2001.
In addition to his current duties, Mr. Mauck teaches seminars in drill writing and orchestration as well as marching band pedagogy. Mr. Mauck continues to be involved in the Drum Corps activity. He previously served as a member of the Syracuse Brigadiers from 2004-2007 and continues to serve the drum corps community as a consultant and advisor.
James J. Allen, Assistant Director

Jim Allen has designed for and consulted with numerous bands, drum and bugle corps, and color guards over the past 25 years. He served as the judge coordinator for the New York State Field Band Conference from 1998-2001 and also served as the Northeast Regional Director for Winter Guard International (WGI) from 1998-2001.
Additionally, Jim has been a member of the New York Federation of Contest Judges since its inception in 1975. During that time, he has served in several capacities with the Federation -- President, Visual Caption Coordinator, and Marching Band Caption Coordinator. He has served as an adjudicator for WGI, DCI, DCA and marching band festivals and championships throughout the United States.
During the past eight years, Jim has served as a consultant and visual tech staff member for the Syracuse Brigadiers Senior Drum and Bugle Corps -- the 1997 and 1999-2002 DCA World Champions. Jim currently serves as Assistant Director of the University at Buffalo Athletic Bands. Additionally, he is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Architecture and Planning at UB, specializing in economic development, urban design, and strategic planning. Mr. Allen is also a Senior Fellow with the University's Institute on Local Governance and Regional Growth.
Joseph Guadagnino, Percussion Instructor
Percussion Arranger Joe Guadagnino has been involved in the marching activity his entire life. His father, sister and brother were involved in the United Drum Corps in Rochester during his early years. Joe marched with the Cadets of Greece for 8 years and the Crossmen for two. Since "aging out", Joe has written, taught and consulted for many groups. Marching bands that Joe has worked with include: Canandaigua HS, Bishop Kearney HS, Liverpool HS, West Genesee HS, Eastridge HS, and Medina HS. Drum Corps include: Fusion, Cadets of Upstate NY, Northmen, Dutch Boy, Rochester Crusaders, Blue Coats and the World Champion Empire Statesmen. Joe is currently the Staff Coordinator and Percussion Consultant of the Empire Statesmen. Joe is a graduate of St. John Fisher College and is a business owner in the Buffalo area.
John Hathaway, Public Relations and Recruiting
Mr. Hathaway is the PR Director and Business Manager of the UB Marching Band. John is a graduate of UB and was in the marching band during the 1960's as a percussionist. Mr. Hathaway currently teaches at Mount Saint Mary Academy as the director of the instrumental program which includes the concert band, jazz ensemble, string program and marching band. This is John's 40th year in education. In addition to his duties at UB, John also judges, consults, and instructs throughout the state. He also serves as the judge coordinator for the NY State Percussion Circuit, Chief Judge of The NY-PENN Judging Association, member of the NY Federation Judging Association and a NYSSMA All- State certified judge
